Chapter 16 My Woman
The two were simultaneously stunned.
Dominic shot a look at Calliope, hinting at her to stay inside the room while he went to open the
door.
Standing outside the door was an overwrought Xavier.
“Dominic, I heard you hit those people-” Before he could finish the rest of his sentence, he noticed the bloodstain on Dominic’s clothes. Xavier inhaled sharply. “Oh my! It’s true!”
“They’re just some bullies,” Dominic uttered nonchalantly. “Besides, I reserved my strength when beating them up. They won’t die from the mild injuries.”
“Mild injuries?” Xavier dragged Dominic to one side and whispered, “You battered them until their internal organs ruptured! Those people are currently being sent to Jazona’s hospital.”
Dominic arched his brow in response. Still, he remained expressionless. They brought that upon themselves for daring to harass Calliope. It wouldn’t be overkill even if I beat them to death.
“By the way, did you break the legs of one of those people?” Xavier was worried sick. “Do you know who that guy’s father is ”
“Why do I care who his father is?”
“They’ll want to take revenge against you!”
Dominic removed his shirt and tossed the bloodstained clothes to one side. Then, he changed into a clean garment.
He knew those bullies‘ came from slightly influential backgrounds. One of them was the village chief’s son, while the other was the town’s head’s nephew. They had always done as they pleased in the villages because they had their family’s support.
Dominic had long yearned to teach them a lesson.
“Why don’t you leave this place with your wife and find someplace to lie low for now?” Xavier suggested. “These people are very troublesome to deal with. The odds are against you, so as wise as you are, you should avoid a head–on confrontation with them.”
Dominic felt Xavier was too noisy and annoying.
He was about to decline when he caught sight of Calliope, who was standing at the bedroom’s entrance, from the corner of his eyes.
“I don’t think we need to hide,” she uttered in an undertone.
Dominic was momentarily dazed before asking in amusement, “Why?”
“We aren’t at fault here.” Her eyes shone with determination. “Those men harassed me under broad daylight. They committed a crime, to begin with, so we were just defending ourselves.”
Dominic gazed at her in admiration. She seems delicate and fragile, but she is unexpectedly independent and tough. Not to mention, she’s not a scaredy–cat.
He curled his lips into a faint smile.
Xavier responded in resignation, “I know this is not your fault, but their families are affluent and powerful-”
“I couldn’t care less about meager influence.” Calliope flashed a weak smile. “Moreover, they still have to obey the law no matter how powerful their families are, right?”
“Uh…”
“That’s right. My wife has a point.” He got to his feet and stood beside her. “Now, this is someone befitting as my woman.”
Calliope blushed and lowered her head.
Xavier sighed. “You two…”
“That’s enough. I appreciate your kindness.” Dominic patted Xavier’s shoulder. “Do you want to stay to have a meal together?”
Xavier hurriedly waved his hand and bid the couple farewell.
Although Dominic wasn’t afraid of those bullies making things difficult for him, he still considered moving out of the village. The bullies must’ve realized I’m not the same Dominic as before when we fought today. We should leave this complicated place as soon as possible to avoid exposing my identity someday.
A few days later, Dominic and Calliope moved to Jazona..
She was baffled when he discussed his plan to relocate with her. However, she didn’t object because his reason was that they could secure a job easier at Jazona since there were more working opportunities there.
In addition, living in the city would shorten their traveling distance to the hospital, so Calliope could care for her mother more conveniently.
They rented a small house. Even though the place wasn’t spacious, Calliope thoroughly cleaned
the inside and outside of the house and even purchased new curtains and bedsheets.

The dining table was layered with an apple–green, checkered pattern tablecloth, while the glass
vases on the windowsill were adorned with some lilacs.
Dominic scanned his surroundings and was reminded of the life he used to live.
The Howlett family’s mansion, spanning tens of thousands of square meters, was constructed on the hillside. Every corner of the magnificent castle–like dwelling house gave off a luxurious and classy vibe.
He used to enjoy daily meals prepared by the best chefs from all over the world.
Still, none of the opulence could compare to the tidy, heartwarming small haven and the simple dishes Calliope made for him.
“What’s wrong?” She regarded him with her dazzling eyes. “Is the food not to your liking?”
Dominic smiled. “The food tastes good.”
“In that case, you should eat more. By the way, Serena introduced me to a job. It’s a sales assistant position at the company she’s currently working for. I can start working tomorrow.”
“That soon?” His gaze darkened. “Is that a listed company? What’s their annual sales record, and who’s the company’s person in charge?”
Calliope was slightly taken aback after listening to that series of questions.
She hadn’t sounded out that much information. Besides, she was merely going to work as a sales assistant, a group of employees at the bottom of the corporate ladder who relied on commissions to make a living, so how was she qualified to bother herself with who was the person in charge of the company?
“That… I’ll gradually ask around after I start working there.”
However, on her first day at work, she unexpectedly discovered her superiors were Jonah Frazer
and Melissa Muller.
Jonah was her senior in university. He pursued Calliope fervently in the past, but she firmly rejected him.
The main reason was that her mother was sick, and she was too occupied for needing to care of her family.
Secondly, Jonah was too calculative. His tendency to curry favor with the wealthy and powerful in the student council and his behavior of revering the elites and disdaining the underclass didn’t appeal to Calliope.
Melissa was the backup Jonah turned to after he failed to gain Calliope’s affection.
As a result, Melissa had always hated Calliope. Unfortunately, it was a small world for them to
stumble into one another at the office.
