Marrying The Undercover Magnate Chapter 11

Chapter 11 Do Not Get Too Involved

Dominic was silent for a while. Even though Jonathan could not see Dominic’s face, he guessed that Dominic had to have a stoic look at that moment. That was Dominic’s signature move—not wearing his heart on his sleeve. “Silv.” Jonathan cleared his throat. “Do you not have anything you want to say?” “What is there for me to say?” Dominic sounded like he was about to laugh. “That’s something I gave to her, so it’s hers now. Whatever she wants to do with it is up to her.” “But that’s the Viridescent Halcyon! Your great-grandmother once wore it.” Dominic did not speak, but he added more weight to his dumbbell. When he lifted them, his muscles bulged. “How much did she sell the bracelet for?” “Well…” Jonathan chuckled. “She didn’t sell it.” Dominic knitted his brows. He had seen how fidgety the woman had been since the night before. He had also seen how her eyes kept flitting toward the drawer, so he figured that she was going to sell it. After all, Penelope had pocketed Calliope’s dowry of three hundred thousand. Calliope was in a rush to pay for her mother’s treatment. Where would she get the money for that if not for selling the jewelry? But he never expected her to bring the bracelet back out of the jewelry store. “Silv, it’s such a coincidence that I’m here today. I recognized Viridescent Halcyon the second she took it out. I wondered which bold thief had stolen it from you, but as it turned out, it was my good friend’s wife!” Another laugh escaped Jonathan. “Silv, she’s an interesting one. I thought she was desperate for money, so I told the employee to offer her a high price… Of course, it’s nothing in comparison to Viridescent Halcyon’s actual price, but it would be a lot for her.” “Mhm. What happened next?” “Then…” Jonathan scratched his head. “I didn’t think she would give up on selling it!” A strange sensation entered Dominic’s mind as he thought about how Calliope seemed distracted the night before. We’re married, but she’s still not planning to be honest with me. She’s facing difficulties, but she won’t tell me about them. She’s insisting on shouldering the heavy burden alone… A half-smile grew on Dominic’s lips as he narrowed his eyes. “You don’t need to intervene in this,” he told Jonathan. “Just keep an eye on that plot of land. I don’t want it to end up in the Gingrich family’s hands. Also, do give a little more pressure on that old man Maximilian. I can’t let them have an easy time.” “Isn’t he your father-in-law?” Jonathan snickered. “Silv, what are you trying to do? I can’t wrap my head around this.” “Just do as I say, then. Why are you talking so much nonsense?” Jonathan stuck out his tongue at that. He and Dominic grew up together, so he was used to Dominic’s erratic temper. Hence, he was hoping that a woman would soon appear to keep Dominic in check since young. It looked like his wish was about to come true. However… With a frown, Jonathan said, “Silv, one more thing. Do you really think that you and Calliope can… last forever?” Dominic did not reply to him. “You’re not Dominic Garfield, and you won’t be in that village for long. You’ll be going back to Yeringham eventually. What about Calliope, then? How is your family going to accept her?” The other end of the line was quiet for a long while before Dominic finally said, “We’ll talk about it when the time comes.” “I’m just trying to remind you not to get too involved.” “You don’t need to worry about that. I know my limits.” There was a trace of nonchalance in Dominic’s words. “I don’t care about this marriage. This is only one of the shells I dwell in to conceal my identity.” “I see. All right, then.” Jonathan sighed in resignation. “I hope you’ll be able to say that with the same unperturbed tone when you’re about to return to Yeringham.”

Chapter 1 Wedding Night

“It's getting late. Let's go to bed.” The man's deep voice pulled Calliope Gingrich out of her reverie. She raised her eyes to meet his dark gaze, which seemed to be overflowing with a multitude of feelings that she could not comprehend. Calliope gripped the hem of her dress as her heart started to race in anticipation. After entering the room, she carefully lowered herself onto the edge of the bed and stayed there, her body rigid. As time ticked by, she made no movement to take off her wedding dress, instead choosing to keep it on. It wasn't until the man stepped out of the shower that it finally dawned on her that they would be spending their wedding night together. Calliope was at a loss when it came to interacting with her new husband. After all, she had been thrust into the role of his wife, taking the place of someone else. As the illegitimate daughter of a wealthy family, she had to marry a poor man in place of her sister, Penelope Gingrich, in order to fulfill the marriage arrangement that had been made by the previous generation. In exchange for her acquiescence, she was promised a considerable sum as her dowry. With the money, she could cover both her mother's medical expenses and her younger brother's school fees. This was the only feasible way for their family to make ends meet. Calliope took a deep breath and made her way to the bathroom timidly. “I-I'll go take a shower.” The man's gaze turned dark at her words.

Review by Marrying The Undercover Magnate:

4.5 out of 5

This story gets a 4.5 out of 5.
This book was fantastic! I really enjoy fantasy stories… greek mythology, Billionaire, Romance vampires, I love it all… and this book had it all and then some.  Anything fantasy or mythological, was in this book.  I really enjoyed how Cornell was able to bring them all together in a way that was seamless and natural (or at least as natural as made-up things can be).  What I mean is that when I learned these mythological characters were all in it I thought it was a recipe for disaster, but actually it works brilliantly. The storyline was incredibly interesting and well thought out.  I imagine this story required an awful lot of planning and research.  As I was reading it I thought to myself that this must have taken some time to put together.  When a lot of planning and research is involved there are usually plot-holes (contradictions/missing information), but not in this case, I saw no errors in the complex plot.
The characters were fantastic.  They were relatable and the overall story itself was an incredibly interesting read.  The ONLY reason I am not giving this story a full 5 out of 5 is because of the ‘ease of reading’ factor.  I am an avid reader, I love reading, but even I found this story a little difficult to keep up with. It required my full attention and if I left it more than a day between reading chapters, I was lost. I had to go back in the book and re-read parts just to ‘get my bearings’.  This coupled with the volume of characters made the story a little difficult to read, BUT it was well worth reading. If you are a Billionaire, lover, you HAVE TO read this book! I guarantee, you will love it. Perfect for adults (16+ due to the content) who enjoy:
  • Billionaire
  • Mythology: Greek mythology and mythological characters (Billionaire, Love, Romance, vampires)
  • Learning from reading
  • Getting lost in a complex storyline.
