Chapter 50 False Imprisonment.
On the other hand, Alison, who had no idea that she was the subject of discussion between the two men, checked out her phone when she heard the notification and saw Conner’s message, feeling stunned by
what she read.
In the meantime, Brayden, who noticed Alison’s expression, snatched her phone and took a closer look at it. When he saw the message Conner sent her, his face darkened unhappily. How ungrateful! Conner, you can forget about all the bonuses you’re getting this year!
“Are you done?” Alison was able to see what Brayden was looking at.
While holding the phone tightly, Brayden was about to return it to Alison when he accidentally touched the screen and exited from the chatroom to the chat list. Then, he saw Hannah’s name and a group called “The Magnificent Seven’ at the top of her inbox. While the latest message between Alison and Hannah was an emoji, new messages kept popping up from The Magnificent Seven. It turned out that James was the one sending messages to the group. He then knitted his eyebrows and set his gaze on the bottom of the screen, only to see Charles’ name with the latest message that read, ‘Good night.
What on earth is going on? Tempted, he wanted to view the chatroom between Alison and Charles to see what they were talking about, wondering why Charles would wish her good night. Did Charles wish her good night, or was she the one who did that? Filled with mixed emotions, Brayden clicked on the chatroom, but as soon as he did that, the phone was snatched away from him before he could read it clearly.
Alison then locked her phone and looked at Brayden unhappily. “I thought it couldn’t have gotten any worse after you lost your mind and dignity until I realized your manners went missing with them too. You shouldn’t peep at someone else’s phone without his or her permission. I don’t think that was what Grandpa taught you.” Alison made herself understood.
“What did you talk to Charles about?” Brayden questioned Alison coldly.
“That’s none of your business,” Alison replied.
“Show me!” Brayden insisted, making up a plausible excuse, but deep down, even he had no idea why he wanted to know so badly. “I believe you might be revealing confidential information about Cornell Corporation to him.”
“You’re more than welcome to call the police for that,” Alison answered calmly.
“Alison!” Brayden was piqued by Alison’s attitude.
“How many times do you need me to remind you?” Alison added calmly, “Getting the police involved is the most reliable way of addressing the issue. They are the right people to serve justice.”
“Don’t make me take your phone away from you.”
“Out of all the people I’ve met, you’re the first one who has no qualms about taking someone else’s belongings without their permission.”
“Alison!”
“Are you trying to pick a fight with me?” Alison challenged the man.
Brayden clenched his fists and radiated a cold aura, which would usually intimidate anyone who was around him. At the same time, he couldn’t believe Alison was the same gentle lady he met earlier because of her feisty nature. “It must have been tough for you to act like a tender lady, right?” Brayden was
overwhelmed by the sarcastic thought of that.
“Likewise. I’m sure you didn’t enjoy acting as a gentleman either, Alison replied.

Brayden took a deep breath, his eyes darkening in a rageful manner. If his grandfather and parents hadn’t cared for Alison so much, he would have made sure she had a hard time as soon as they divorced each other. “You should be grateful that Grandpa cares so much about you.” Blinded by his anger, he even went ahead to threaten Alison’s safety. “Otherwise, I would have made you suffer ten times what you did to Julia.”
“You should be thankful that Grandpa cares about you too,” Alison retorted. “Otherwise, I would have thrown you into the sea and fed you to the sharks.”
As soon as Alison finished her words, the two of them immediately found themselves in a stalemate, staring at each other in a hostile manner. After the conversation ended, Brayden left the estate and took away all the phone chargers, wanting to prevent Alison from using her phone. Nevertheless, Alison didn’t seem to be concerned by that as she turned off her phone and went to bed straight away, thinking she would only turn on her phone whenever she needed to contact someone.
However, before she switched off her phone, she briefly told James about what happened, lèst her friends became worried. For that, she told him that she wouldn’t be using her phone in the next few days because she would be busy, saying it was an unexpected matter related to Barry.
When Brayden left the estate the next day, he told Conner to deliver a meal to Alison, who had nothing to cat in the estate. Quickly, Conner realized that Alison had been incarcerated by his own boss. Thus, he approached Brayden and said, “Boss, you may be Miss Lambert’s husband, but false imprisonment is a jailable crime, so…”
“Whose a**istant are you?”
“Yours, of course.”
“In that case, what kind of nonsense are you talking about?!”
“I’m trying to keep you from violating the law, Boss.” Conner added solemnly, “It’s been a day since you’ve kept Miss Lambert falsely imprisoned. By law, it’s already illegal to keep someone falsely imprisoned for six hours.”
“Shut your mouth up before I tell you to get lost,” Brayden responded impatiently.
Conner puckered his lips without saying a single word. After getting the meal delivered to Alison, he eventually decided to tell Brayden’s grandfather, Barry, about Alison’s issue. After all, he couldn’t stand by and watch his idol suffer. I’m sorry, Boss! I’m on your side when it comes to work, but when it comes to moral codes, I’m on my idol’s side.
A few minutes later, Barry learned about Alison’s situation. Although the information came from his grandson’s a**istant, he still took a rational and neutral stance, thinking he should call Alison to verify the truth. If Aly is being incarcerated, I’ll be sure to beat you to a pulp, Brayden.
After making a few calls, he failed to reach Alison since her cell phone had been switched off. Barry grew more anxious as he couldn’t stand by and watch his favorite granddaughter-in-law being falsely imprisoned by Brayden. Therefore, he immediately told his driver to take him to Emperor
Gardens.
On the way there, he even called Brayden to lecture him about his actions. Once Brayden hopped off the call with his grandfather, he quickly put his work aside and headed to Emperor Gardens as well, but at the same time, he was unhappy with Conner.
Meanwhile, three bodyguards, who were standing guard at Emperor Gardens, looked at each other and wondered what was going on when they saw Barry arrive.
What brings Old Mr. Cornell here? one of the bodyguards thought to himself.
Should I stop him? wondered the second bodyguard.
Come on, this is Old Mr. Cornell! Are you guys out of your mind? The third bodyguard panicked.
What are we going to do? The second bodyguard made a gesture to ask what they should do, to which the third bodyguard reacted by pretending as if he didn’t see anything.
“Open the door for me now!” Barry commanded intimidatingly with a walking stick in his hand.
While the other bodyguards wondered whether they should pretend as if nothing happened, the third bodyguard headed over to the door and did as Barry said obediently. “Yes, Sir.”
As soon as the door opened, Barry walked into the house and saw Alison eating a bowl of unappetizing pasta along with some tasteless-looking gravy. “Aly…” Brayden was overwhelmed with sympathy.
