Chapter 40 Due For A Promotion
“Serena? What’s wrong?”
Calliope noticed how Serena was rooted to the spot and was worried that she might have scalded herself. Concerned, she got up and went into the kitchen to check on her.
To her surprise, Serena was laughing uncontrollably while staring at the pot of soup and herbal dregs.
“This is…” Calliope was stunned. So this is what I’ve been smelling since early in the morning?
Serena held back her laughter and looked at Calliope meaningfully. “I’m going to tell you what’s going on, but you have to remain calm.”
“What exactly is going on?”
“These are all herbs.” Serena scooped up some of the ingredients and began naming them one by one, explaining to Calliope.
“The rest are quite common herbs. You should be able to recognize them.”
Confused, Calliope asked, “What are these ingredients used for? Why did Dominic brew this soup for me?”
Serena burst out laughing. “These ingredients serve to strengthen a woman’s sexual organs. Luckily, you have yet to drink it. Otherwise, you will be lusting after Dominic all night long. He won’t be your match!”
Calliope was momentarily stunned, and she soon began to blush furiously.
“What’s with him?” Serena hooked her arm around Calliope’s neck. “He knows that you’re having your period and can’t do it with him. Why is he still trying to get you in the mood?”
“Serena!” Calliope shot daggers at her, stopping her from running her mouth.
“All right, all right. I won’t tease you anymore.” With that, Serena helped her back to bed.
No matter what Dominic’s intention was, there was no way Calliope was going to drink that soup.
Serena proceeded to make Calliope some hot cocoa.
“By the way, I have something I want to talk to you about.”
Calliope became nervous upon seeing how the smile on Serena’s face was replaced by solemnness. “What is it?”
“When I pa**ed by Mr. Magnus’ office this morning, I heard him talking to Melissa. They mentioned your name.”
Calliope’s face clouded over.
Sebastian Magnus was Melissa’s uncle and also the company’s major shareholder. Calliope was sure that Melissa would complain to her uncle after she slapped her that day.
Looks like I’m about to lose my job. But, I haven’t been applying for new jobs lately, and I still have some unfinished work…
“Relax.” Serena patted the back of Calliope’s hand. “Actually, I was surprised to hear the exchange. Melissa wouldn’t stop badmouthing you, but Mr. Magnus didn’t entertain her. Instead, he praised you for your work performance. He sounded like he wanted to promote you as the team leader of the sales department!”
“What are you talking about?” Calliope widened her eyes in puzzlement.
She was only a regular salesperson and had hardly met people like Sebastian. As such, she certainly did not know him well enough.
However, she often heard from her seniors that Sebastian was a well-mannered person who treated everyone equally regardless of their positions. He was also easy to get along with. In fact, he was not biased toward Melissa.
“Perhaps, Mr. Magnus judges people based on their merits and not their relations with him?” Serena looked at her before continuing, “Two seniors had recently retired from the company, and they took quite a number of clients with them. The company is currently in need of capable people. Cally, maybe this will be your chance to shine!”
Calliope pursed her lips and kept quiet.
She recalled something that Dominic had told her. When you have doubts about something or someone, put yourself in that person’s shoes and see things from a different point of view.
“Serena,” Calliope called out softly. “If you are a major shareholder of the company, and your niece has been beaten by one of the employees, will you ignore that and still promote that particular employee? If that employee is very capable, do you think she will be an ally or enemy of your niece?”
