Chapter 36 Sharing A Bed
When Dominic was sixteen, he had already been accepted by one of the three best business universities in the world, Wharton University. He was the outstanding heir that Howlett Group had high hopes for.
If not for the plane accident masterminded by someone, he would’ve been in control of Howlett Group by then.
In response to Calliope’s question, he smiled silently.
As she pouted, a thought crossed her mind. Maybe he had his first crush when he was sixteen? They say men’s first love is something they have the hardest time forgetting. He seemed pretty excited when he mentioned whatever he wanted to say, but forced himself to stop halfway through. In that case, it has to be about his first crush.
A sad look flashed past her eyes. Well, since he doesn’t want to tell me, I shouldn’t ask. Still, it does bother me a little…
Quietly, Calliope went to the bedroom to grab a new bedsheet before laying it on the couch in the living room.
Dominic was stunned for a few seconds before he grabbed her wrist. “You… Why are you putting the bedsheet on the couch?”
Turning to him, she asked, “Is there a problem?”
“Of course!” He did his best to appear composed. “Didn’t you say you’re letting me sleep with you tonight and-”
“My cousin was beaten up, yet you’re still thinking about that? There’s no way Cay can return home tonight. If I don’t take care of him, who will?” She glared at him in annoyance, clearly still upset about the matter regarding his first crush.
Dominic had no clue about what was on her mind, so he found the change in her attitude rather abrupt. “You’re letting him stay here tonight? So you’re preparing this couch for him?”
“No, it’s for me,” she replied expressionlessly.
“What did you say?” His eyes widened. “You’re not asking me to—”
“Yes, you’ll be sleeping with Cay in the room while I sleep on the couch.” Her expression remained indifferent.
“But there’s only one bed in the room!”
“The bed’s large enough for the two of you. Feel free to use the opportunity to chat about something only between men with him,” spat Calliope as she shoved a pillow into his arms.
Dominic was rendered speechless, and he took a few deep breaths.
Just as Dominic was still in a daze, Calliope had already urged Caleb to wash up before hitting the sack in the room.
Obediently, Caleb retired into the bedroom and lay on the bed.
Dominic felt his temples throb as he bit the bullet and slept on the other side of the bed. I can’t believe I’d be spending my first night in this room with a man. That one hour I spent in the bathroom was for nothing!
When Caleb heard Dominic tossing and turning on the bed, he sat up and chatted with the latter because he couldn’t sleep either. “Do you think I’m useless, Dominic? I keep getting bullied by people.”
Caleb was a kindhearted, academically-excellent teenager. However, he was too meek and had low self-esteem due to familial reasons.
He was wary of Dominic the first time he saw the latter, but after Dominic led him to the balcony and chatted patiently with him, vowing to avenge him, he realized that the aloof-looking man was actually quite reliable.
“You know what? You’re right, Dominic,” Caleb uttered in a tiny voice. “A person should learn to be independent, especially a man. I want to learn from you so I can protect my sister and family.”
However, Dominic remained silent with his back facing Caleb.
“Why aren’t you saying anything, Dominic?” The teenager inched closer to him. “Are you uncomfortable because Calliope isn’t lying next to you?”
You already know the answer to that, so why are you asking? Dominic cursed inwardly before forcing himself to reply in the negative. “No.”
“Oh, I’m glad to hear that.” Caleb flashed a silly smile. “Sorry for disturbing you two tonight. I didn’t want to trouble Calliope, but after I was beaten, I felt pretty down. I didn’t know where else to go but here. You won’t blame me, will you, Dominic?”
“No.” Dominic’s eyes were tightly shut. For the love of god, please stop talking already.
“Say, Dominic.” Sniffing, Caleb asked, “What did you apply to your body, and why does it smell so nice?”
The man responded with silence.
“Do you always apply whatever this is before going to bed with Calliope every night?”
“Shut up! Go to sleep!” Dominic bellowed.
