Chapter 34 Protect Him
That day, no one knew why Melissa returned to the company with swollen cheeks and bleeding lips after leaving the building for a while.
Her wretched appearance resembled Jonah’s after he was beaten up the other day.
Those clever enough were able to link those two observations together with Calliope. However, Calliope was an amiable and hardworking person in everyone’s eyes. As such, they all believed that even if Calliope was indeed the one who hit Melissa, the latter was the one who forced Calliope’s hand, resulting in her own miserable state. Thus, Melissa only had herself to blame.
Additionally, because there wasn’t any concrete evidence to prove that point, everyone just glossed it over without paying much attention.
While the incident wasn’t caught on the surveillance cameras, Cyrus witnessed the whole thing.
He was attending to work matters at a nearby law firm when he happened to see Calliope hit Melissa, which was a rare sight.
Immediately, he reported the incident to Dominic. Perhaps due to Jonathan’s influence, Cyrus’ tone resembled his friend’s. “Your wife is such a fierce woman, Dominic! You should’ve seen how powerful and clean her slaps were. Also, she threatened Melissa not to insult you again.”
A smile emerged on Dominic’s countenance. No wonder she seemed slightly anxious when she came home that day and asked me how long she’d be imprisoned for hitting someone… In reality, I don’t think she’s that brave. However, she’s willing to go to great lengths just to protect me.
As he watched Calliope busy about in the kitchen, the look in his eyes softened as a fuzzy sensation flooded his heart.
When he entered the kitchen, he saw her wrestling a fish.
The fish was on death’s door as it lay on the chopping board. Moments later, she rendered the fish unconscious by hitting it with the kitchen knife’s flat surface. As the fish opened and closed its mouth, she speedily removed its scales before cutting its stomach open.
Dominic grinned. I think this is my first time witnessing a soft and meek woman kill a fish. It’s a gory but interesting scene.
“Why are you here?” When Calliope heard his footsteps, she turned to face him, a few stray strands of hair falling before her eyes.
“Why don’t you just buy a fish that’s already dead? Why go through the trouble of killing it yourself?” he asked tenderly.
“You don’t understand.” She explained, “If I let the stall owner kill it for me, they may swap it with a fish that’s not fresh. It’s not worth the risk. I’d rather do it myself, even if it’s more troublesome.”
For the past two days, the weather had been sweltering. Hence, she only wore a thin t-shirt and short pants while at home. Her white t-shirt was a little transparent, so her bra strap was slightly visible. When his line of sight landed on her fair, slender thighs, he stared at it for a few moments before quickly turning away as his heart raced.
After she readjusted the straps of her apron, it rested right on her thighs.
Upon seeing that, Dominic felt his throat getting dry.
A horde of emotions a**ailed him as he watched her busy about in the kitchen while wearing an apron. Even the sweat on her forehead and the tip of her nose was making his desires inundate him.
Hence, he took multiple deep breaths to suppress the lustful thoughts crossing his mind. Wait, I shouldn’t need to do this. She’s my wife, after all! It’s totally legal for me to do inappropriate things with her!
When Calliope noticed he wasn’t moving, she turned to him again. She noticed the slight redness. on his cheeks and how his breathing was rapid. The look in his eyes turned odd, too. Shocked, she hastily felt his forehead. “What’s going on with you? Are you feeling unwell? Why is your face so
hot?”
