Chapter 26 Ticklish Yet Empty
Jonathan’s heart lodged in his throat.
Even through the phone, he could vividly sense the murderous aura emanating from Dominic.
Did I spoil his fun?
Staring at his watch, Jonathan slapped himself on the head. D*mn it! If anyone interrupts me when I’m seeking pleasure, I’ll want to tear that person into pieces too!
“Silv…” Jonathan explained while beaming ingratiatingly. “If it isn’t that urgent, I wouldn’t have called you at this time either. I thought you don’t usually sleep this early…”
“Just spit it out!” Dominic snapped, then turned to walk to the balcony and closed the sliding door behind him.
“I’m afraid you might have to make a trip back to Yeringham.” Jonathan lowered his voice. “News that you aren’t dead has spread by now. Old Mr. Howlett is very agitated. And so are your aunt, and uncle… They-”
“All right, I got it.” Dominic frowned. “I’ll get in touch with them in private, but returning to Yeringham will have to wait.”
Jonathan did not quite understand what Dominic meant and merely hummed an acknowledgment.
“Oh, by the way, Silv. I’ve checked. The client Calliope met during the business meeting today is the same one that Melissa failed to clinch after following up for three months. Hah! I’ve played a small trick and helped Calliope sign the agreement. The commission for this deal is pretty hefty. She’ll probably receive a hundred thousand.”
Dominic, who was fuming with anger, ended the call without even waiting for Jonathan to finish talking.
Puzzlement inundated Jonathan once again. He poured a glass of wine for Cyrus and asked meekly, “What did I say this time?”
Cyrus laughed so hard that he almost ran out of breath.
“You’ve spoiled his fun. Do you expect him to be nice?”
Racked with guilt, Jonathan kept smacking himself in the face.
“Also, why did you have to blab about Calliope clinching a deal?”
“That’s because…” Jonathan’s eyes went wide. “Did I flatter him in the wrong way again?”
Cyrus rolled his eyes at Jonathan in response. “The deal Melissa failed to sign even after three
months has now got secured by Calliope, a rookie. There are so many employees in the company. What do you think they will think or say about her?”
Jonathan fell silent.
“Besides, I’ve looked through Calliope’s sales plan.” Cyrus sighed softly. “The proposal is so impeccable it’s equivalent to one taken from a textbook. Even without you pulling a trick, Mr. Sanders will still sign the contract! In other words, you did nothing to help Calliope clinch the deal; do you understand?”
Jonathan’s facial features turned contorted as a wave of misery crashed onto him.
“Think about it carefully before you speak or do anything in the future!” Cyrus lightly patted Jonathan’s shoulders and sighed. “I should’ve studied medicine back then. That way, I’ll be able to treat your brain now!”
On the other side, Dominic leaned against the balcony rail, his deep eyes seemingly blending. with the night sky. It was hard for one to discern any changes in his emotions.
The night breeze brought a chilling coldness that sobered him up quickly. By the time he returned inside, Calliope was no longer in the bedroom. As he swept his gaze around, he heard a faint tumbling sound reverberating from the washing machine in the bathroom.
When Calliope saw him, she flashed a faint smile that revealed her dimples.
Feeling slightly awkward, she lowered her head to separate the machine-washable laundry from the hand-washable ones and gently said, “Go get some sleep first. I’ll wash the clothes.”
Dominic heaved a light sigh. Inwardly, he was shrieking in agony.
After all, one’s sexual urge would come suddenly and impulsively when triggered. But one would feel comparatively awful when the desire was abruptly interrupted.
At present, he had no choice but to contain his urge.
The feeling resembled countless bugs nibbling the flesh on his body-ticklish yet empty.
Then again, he figured he could not possibly act like a pervert and force her to do it all over again
with him.
Left with no choice, he merely mustered a smile in response. He then headed to the living room, threw himself onto the couch, and buried himself under the blanket.
News of Calliope clinching a business deal spread around the entire company in no time. Some of her seniors in the sales department were impressed by her performance.
After all, she made zero sales performance two months ago. The fact that she could secure such a big deal within such a short time was indeed mindblowing.
During the weekly meeting of the sales department, the sales supervisor highlighted Calliope’s
accomplishments and even praised her for her limitless potential. At the same time, he also awarded her as a form of encouragement.
Throughout it all, Calliope remained observant and quietly paid attention to the crowd’s
reactions.
While some congratulations and applause came genuinely, others were rather pretentious.
There were also people like Melissa, who ostracized Calliope and expressed their envy blatantly.
Nonetheless, Calliope was unbothered by any of them. What she was most concerned about was the numbers in her bank account.
“Hah! How pretentious!” As Calliope was passing by the pantry, she overheard a discussion. “Just look at how calm she was when the supervisor commended her just now! She no doubt looks very
seasoned.”
“Who knows, she might really be a seasoned player!” Another high-pitched voice sounded. “Perhaps the more she pretends to be innocent, the more interesting her private life is!”
“What did you hear?”
“Shhh…” that person responded in a low voice. “I heard that Calliope managed to clinch the business deal because someone helped her from behind!”
“Who is it? Is it Mr. Frazer? Rumor has it that Mr. Frazer used to court Calliope back in his university days. He was head over heels for her! It’s a pity Calliope doesn’t feel anything for him!”
“I don’t think it’s Mr. Frazer. Why would he give such a good deal to Calliope instead of his girlfriend? Besides, if Melissa fails to secure the deal even after three months, there’s no way Mr. Frazer can do it!”
“So, you’re saying… there’s someone more influential and powerful supporting Calliope from behind?”
What followed the buzzing whispering was a burst of collective giggles from the group.
Calliope found it boring and turned to leave. Unexpectedly, the moment she did so, she bumped right into Melissa’s hostility-filled eyes.
Taken aback, she could feel her heart thumping wildly in her chest. Nevertheless, she still maintained a calm countenance.
“Good morning, Ms. Muller.”
With her arms crossed in front of her chest, Melissa coldly snickered at Calliope. “How do you expect me to have a good morning when you keep appearing before my eyes and bothering me?”
