Chapter 27
Gail’s hand holding the toothpick paused, and then she fed the apple from the toothpick into Kara’s mouth, “What happened actually? You didn’t kill her, right?”
“It’s impossible for you to do such a crazy thing as murder.” Gail said firmly, “What’s the truth of the matter?”
Kara had endured so much suffering, but she had never shed a tear. But at this moment, after repeated blows and humiliation, she burst into tears!
Shepard! Look! Even Gail, who has known me for less than half a year, knows me so well!
Shepard! We’ve known each other for most of our lives!
Shepard! Listen! Finally, someone believes that I didn’t kill anyone and I didn’t do such a dirty thing!
Kara cried her heart out.
Gail put down the toothpick in her hand. Instead of trying to persuade Kara not to cry, she slowly stroked Kara’s hair with her palm and said, “Good girl, it’s okay. I know, how could a silly woman like you have the guts to kill someone? No, to be more precise, you’re too proud to kill anyone.”
She continued, “I guess you loved Mr. Brown very much. But you would never bring yourself to kill Mr. Brown’s beloved woman in order to get him. Kara, you are so proud. You wouldn’t bother to do such a thing.”
Kara cried harder! Her feelings that had not been indulged for many years were suddenly released.
This afternoon, Kara never stopped crying.
She said to Gail incoherently, “I didn’t do it, but he didn’t believe it. They all didn’t believe it.
“He hates me, and the whole world knows it. I thought that after I got out of prison, I would be able to live a peaceful life.
“Gail, they are all scolding me. The whole world is scolding me. They call me vicious. They call me low. Gail, I don’t care… I don’t care about the money either.
“They humiliated me. They made me lie on the ground like a dog wagging its tail. They scolded me with all kinds of insults. But I’m not sad. It’s nothing.
“In the prison, I was stripped naked and thrown in a cage, and a high–pressure water gun was directed at my body. In the cold winter, the freezing water hurt my bones. If I dared to say a word, someone would beat me up when I went back to the cell. I went through all the hard stuff. These are nothing.
“Gail, she died. She died to save me. I got her killed and I owe her so much. I can’t die. I’m going to live for her, and realize her Santa Monica Pier dream.”
Gail stayed with Kara, listening to her incoherent narration. For Kara, her grievances of many years were finally vented today. The secret hidden in her heart was also spoken out incoherently.
As for what Santa Monica Pier dream was, and who the girl was, Gail didn’t know. But she vaguely guessed that this girl was more important than life to Kara.
The sun was setting, and the afterglow of the setting sun. shone into the ward.
Gail stood up and glanced softly at the hospital bed. The woman on the hospital bed had a sickly pale face, curled up under the quilt, and fell asleep under the warm light of the setting sun.
When she was about to leave, Kara on the bed suddenly opened her eyes and murmured, “Gail, I have to pay off my debts. I have nothing left but myself. Can I use myself to pay off?”
As soon as she finished it, she closed her eyes and fell asleep again.
Gail felt so sorry for her, and there were mixed feelings in her heart.
Kara was so sick that she was confused, but she was still thinking about her debts… Gail certainly didn’t believe that such a person would have done such a nasty thing.
Kara said that everyone was calling her low…Kara was low? If Kara was low, who else in the world was noble?
Kara was so proud that Gail admired her!
Back then, I still cried bitterly when no one was around, and even thought of dying, but Kara, a silly woman, endured all this without saying a word.
Back then, she had cried bitterly when no one was around and even thought of killing herself. But Kara had been enduring all this without saying a word.
As for the money that Kara begged for by selling her dignity in others‘ eyes, Kara had given it to her without hesitation. Others didn’t know, but Gail knew… This silly woman had sacrificed dignity not for money, but freedom.
Shepard used five million to restrict the freedom of a silly
woman.
The five million was an astronomical sum to this silly woman, and it was a shackle firmly binding her.
Kara had been using all her strength to break free from this shackle.
She knew she was no match for him, but she still fought against him without hesitation… Mr. Brown, haven’t you gone too far?
As the night darkened, Gail returned to the Grande Entertainment Club and entered her office
“Where is she?”
“Mr. Brown? Who are you talking about?” Gail wasn’t surprised that Shepard had come to her office today, and he had been waiting for her in the office.
“Where is Kara?“
