Chapter 12 You Still Have the Nerve to Drink

“Okay.” Charles always complied with Alison’s requests. After that, she continued to eat her meal. Nonetheless, she couldn’t help but wonder what Brayden was doing in the restaurant. Meanwhile, Brayden was pondering the same question. Then, he and his friends Kian Ryan and Raymond Cooper went to the private room. Still, Brayden couldn’t get the image out of his head when he opened the door and saw her sitting close to Charles. “Why are you so quiet?” Kian asked, still eyeing Brayden with a mischievous glint. “You said you have something to tell us, didn’t you? So, what’s on your mind?” “Nothing,” Brayden replied, not wanting to delve into his personal issues. After hearing that, Kian and Raymond exchanged a look. Then, Kian, who had a penchant for drama, remarked, “I heard that Charles has been celibate for 28 years and has never been intimate with a woman. So, at this point, the rumor may not be accurate.” “Yeah.” Raymond took a sip of his drink with an expression of indifference. Nevertheless, Brayden was annoyed by the mention of Charles’ name, and he immediately barked, “Do you have too much time on your hands?” “I guess I do,” Kian admitted with a smile. The three of them had a close relationship, having grown up together, and they weren’t afraid of Brayden getting mad. On the other hand, Brayden felt stifled inside. When he saw Raymond, who was minding his own business, his mind automatically recalled the variety show he had watched at home with Alison while they were discussing something. Suddenly, Brayden’s anger surged up at once, and without caring if he would hurt the innocent people, he blurted out, “You scumbag. You still have the nerve to drink?” Raymond was confused. How did I offend him? Afterward, Kian hooked his arm around Raymond’s shoulder. Then, with a wicked and sinister smile, Kian said, “Let’s not argue with someone who has been cheated on.” “On that topic, you’re indeed the pot calling the kettle black,” Brayden retorted, never one to hold back on his good friends. “At least Alison doesn’t have someone else’s child in her belly.” When Kian heard those words, his smile suddenly froze at the corners of his mouth. On the contrary, those statements left Raymond bewildered. So, he tilted his head, still carrying an air of gentleness, and asked, “What’s going on?” “Didn’t you bring us here for something?” Kian automatically changed the subject, and his mood was not as good as before. “What’s the matter? Hurry up and spit it out.” “Can you guys help care for Julia for me during this period?” Brayden brought up this matter, temporarily forgetting about Alison’s situation. “Consider me owing you guys a favor.” After hearing that, they both knew how difficult it was to get Brayden to owe anyone a favor. Nonetheless, their focus was only on one thing. “Julia is back?” Brayden replied nonchalantly, “Mhmm.” “Did you divorce Alison for her?” Raymond asked the critical question, his expression becoming more complicated. “Yes,” Brayden admitted. At that moment, Kian finally found a chance to rub salt on Brayden’s wound. “Have you forgotten how she left you and caused you to be depressed before?” “That was a misunderstanding. Six months ago, she explained everything to me.” Brayden didn’t hide anything from them and continued, “Alison told me not to meet her before receiving the divorce papers. So, I need you guys to help care for Julia during this time.” However, Raymond remembered Alison as a polite and gentle girl, asking, “Is she not angry?” “Not really,” Brayden said after thinking about it. Suddenly, Kian blurted out, “Looks like she has no feelings for you. She probably only married you for your money.” “She’s not that kind of person.” Brayden instinctively defended her. “Then, why did she ask for things when she divorced you?” Kian sneered, his eyes filled with sarcasm. “Some people disguise themselves well. They appear with pride and self-respect, but who knows what kind of person they are?” Then, he added, “People can be two-faced.” Brayden furrowed his brows in response, feeling apprehensive about Kian’s words. He wanted to say that Alison didn’t care for money, but he became uncertain when he recalled what she had requested in the divorce agreement. As he contemplated these matters, his disposition grew increasingly agitated, and he couldn’t even enjoy his meal. After that, he glanced toward the private room door with a hint of expectation, unsure what he hoped for. Suppose Alison has an ambiguous relationship with Charles; she should have approached me and explained herself after I closed the door. Unfortunately, it’s been almost half an hour, and she still hasn’t shown up. Thinking about all this, he took another sip of wine. In the meantime, Kian and Raymond noticed that Brayden appeared deep in thought. After another ten minutes, Kian couldn’t stand it anymore and stood up, hands in his pockets. “After we finish eating, let’s say hello to Mr. Adkins next door.” “I’m not going,” Brayden refused decisively. She should come to me if she feels guilty about dating another man. After hearing that, Kian knew Brayden couldn’t lower his pride, so he gave him an out. “Mr. Adkins came all the way from Imperia to Riverton. Don’t we need to say hello?” However, Brayden hesitated upon hearing that. “Let’s go,” Raymond said as he patted his shoulder. With such a reasonable excuse, Brayden stood on his feet and followed Kian and Raymond. All three men were nearly six feet tall and possessed striking good looks. They would definitely cause a commotion if they appeared together in other places. Since it was a members-only restaurant, there wasn’t a huge crowd. When they arrived next door, Brayden and Raymond stood together and delegated the task of knocking on the door to Kian. He was accustomed to dealing with situations like these, and after giving the door a quick knock, he was granted permission to enter. Then, his narrow eyes swept over Alison and Charles before he smiled at him. “Mr. Adkins, you came to Riverton without telling us. We should’ve shown you some hospitality.” “Thank you, Mr. Ryan.” Charles wiped his mouth, acting like a gentleman as always. “This is…” Kian looked at Alison and deliberately dragged out the last syllable. After hearing that, she remained silent. In the two years of their marriage, Brayden had never formally introduced her to his friends, but they had met at several banquets. Nonetheless, she didn’t believe this man didn’t know who she was. “She’s my friend,” Charles stated simply. “Mr. Adkins, would you mind if I bring two friends to share a table with you?” Kian said without any embarra**ment. “It would be nice to get to know each other.” “Today is not very convenient.” Charles politely declined with a smile. “I’ll personally invite you to a meal again, Mr. Ryan.” The simple excuse cut off Kian from pursuing it further. It prompted him to look closer at Alison, wondering if her relationship with Charles was more complicated than he had previously a**umed. After all, someone like Charles had rejected him so decisively, which was rare. While Kian merely desired to watch the show and exact his revenge on Brayden for scolding him earlier, he said, “How about this? We’ll be in the adjacent private room and wait for you two to finish the meal, then we can all get together later. What do you say?” Charles did not directly refuse him this time, instead looking at the woman beside him.

Book Synopsis:

Chapter 1 She's Back, So Let's Divorce

At night in Emperor Gardens, Riverton. In the spacious and bright living room, two people sat facing each other. Between them was a divorce agreement. The man wore a well-ironed suit, and he had beautiful features but a cold demeanor. The aura he exuded was so oppressive that the atmosphere around them felt tense. His cold gaze landed on the woman who was silently sitting opposite him, and his orbs were as dark as the night sky outside. "Let's get a divorce on Monday," Brayden Cornell uttered a**ertively in a cold and baritone voice. "Apart from the compensation in the divorce agreement, you can ask for anything else you need from me." "Why so sudden?" Alison Lambert spoke in such a hushed voice he nearly couldn't catch her. "Julia is back," he answered curtly. Of course, she knew who Julia was. After a short moment of silence, she replied, "Sure." Brayden was slightly taken aback as if he didn't expect her to agree to it so willingly. Flipping open the divorce agreement and skimming through the clauses, she was reminded of how she and Brayden met. Two years ago, they met at Nightingale Club. She visited the bar full of worries and bumped into Brayden, who was just dumped by his girlfriend. After taking two shots of drinks, they engaged in a pleasant conversation as if they'd been friends for years. There was no one-night stand, and they returned to their respective homes after enjoying each other's company. She saw him again three days later after that night, and when he brought his a**istant along to propose marriage to her, she agreed readily.
Alison's Identity of Romance

Review by Alison's:

4.5 out of 5

This story gets a 4.5 out of 5.
This book was fantastic! I really enjoy fantasy stories… greek mythology, Billionaire, Romance vampires, I love it all… and this book had it all and then some.  Anything fantasy or mythological, was in this book.  I really enjoyed how Cornell was able to bring them all together in a way that was seamless and natural (or at least as natural as made-up things can be).  What I mean is that when I learned these mythological characters were all in it I thought it was a recipe for disaster, but actually it works brilliantly. The storyline was incredibly interesting and well thought out.  I imagine this story required an awful lot of planning and research.  As I was reading it I thought to myself that this must have taken some time to put together.  When a lot of planning and research is involved there are usually plot-holes (contradictions/missing information), but not in this case, I saw no errors in the complex plot.
The characters were fantastic.  They were relatable and the overall story itself was an incredibly interesting read.  The ONLY reason I am not giving this story a full 5 out of 5 is because of the ‘ease of reading’ factor.  I am an avid reader, I love reading, but even I found this story a little difficult to keep up with. It required my full attention and if I left it more than a day between reading chapters, I was lost. I had to go back in the book and re-read parts just to ‘get my bearings’.  This coupled with the volume of characters made the story a little difficult to read, BUT it was well worth reading. If you are a Billionaire, lover, you HAVE TO read this book! I guarantee, you will love it. Perfect for adults (16+ due to the content) who enjoy:
  • Billionaire
  • Mythology: Greek mythology and mythological characters (Billionaire, Love, Romance, vampires)
  • Learning from reading
  • Getting lost in a complex storyline.
