Chapter 38 Can’t Let Him Take Advantage of You
‘That’s because I’m Aly’s favorite,‘ James replied to Hannah.
Then, he replied to Charles, ‘Nope.‘
Soon enough, new comments appeared in the comment section. Fool No. 1 had commented, ‘What a great life you are living. Did you get an autograph from your favorite racer?‘
Fool No. 2 also left a comment. ‘What in the world?! That’s not fair! Aly wouldn’t take me there even if I begged her!‘
Fool No. 3 joined the comment section as well. ‘It’s funny how you get so worked up by watching sports car racing with her. Did I ever say anything when I slept with Aria in bed?‘
James retorted, ‘You fools don’t get to talk to me!‘
‘You are just jealous of us because you are single,‘ the trio replied to him simultaneously.
The more James looked at it, the more upset he was. He huffed angrily as he sat on the passenger seat. “Aly, they are making fun of me for being single!”
“It’s okay. I’ll soon be single, too,” Alison replied.
His
eyes lit up when he heard her words. Then, he replied to them with what she had said. It was only then he felt slightly appeased.
After Alison had driven a few rounds in the suburbs, it was already 1.00AM when she got home. As she lay on the bed, she slowly calmed down. At this moment, she realized that, compared to getting married to Brayden, she was also happy being alone. Whether she was happy or not, she had friends around her, and that made her realize that love wasn’t much needed in her life.
Thus, Alison kept the same relaxing routine as she spent the day for the next few days. Most of the time, she was researching the information that Carl gave her. If she didn’t get a call from Riverton, she could stay at Imperia until the day she went to get the divorce decree.
When she saw it was Sylvia who was calling, her first reaction was to ignore it. However, she eventually picked it up when it rang the second time.
“Aly.”
“Hi, Mom.”
“Can you come to Riverton?” Sylvia had mixed feelings when she knew that Alison had gone to Imperia. “Your grandpa had fainted after knowing what Brayden did to you. He is now in the emergency room.”
When Alison heard her words, the grip on her phone became tighter.
Barry had treated her better than her own grandpa.
“Okay.”
After hanging up the phone, she told James and Hannah about this matter.
When Hannah heard her words, she was worried. “Can I tag along, Aly?”
“I’m going there to deal with some things,” Alison said softly to her. “If you want to have fun at Riverton, I’ll take you there once your school break starts.”
“Okay, then. Call me if anything happens. Don’t try to handle it all by yourself, alright?”
“Alright.”
“Aly!”
“Yeah?”
“Aside from being your sister, I am always here to lend an ear for you.”
Hearing her words, Alison paused for a moment before going over and ruffling Hannah’s hair. Gentleness filled her face as she smiled and said, “I’ll be off.”
Since Hannah had insisted on accompanying her to the airport, Alison didn’t refuse.
It was already 3.00PM when the plane landed at Riverton. When Alison entered the car, she called Sylvia and asked about the hospital address. By the time she arrived at the hospital, Barry had already been transferred to the ward. He was awake, but he had a grim expression and seemed sulky.
“Aly?” Sylvia was the first to notice her.
Alison brought some of Barry’s favorite fruits and some nourishment. After she had put the things down, she greeted the people in the room. Other than Sylvia and Barry, Brayden was also in the room. There was an intimidating aura radiating off Brayden as he stood there. He wore a black striped suit, seemingly in a bad mood. The most noticeable thing Alison could see on his face was the handprint.
Did Grandpa slap him? she wondered.
When Barry saw Alison, his mood lightened instantly. “Come here, Aly.”
Hearing his words, Alison walked over. She was indeed worried about Barry. During the past two years, she realized he was an interesting elder as she spent time with him. Barry was
knowledgeable and wasn’t strict. Thus, as they got along with each other more and more, they became closer, seemingly as if they were a true family.
“I know everything about you two.” Barry took her hand in his and looked at her with regret. “It is our family who had wronged you. I didn’t teach him to be a good person.”
“No, Grandpa. This is his fault. It has nothing to do with you nor the family,” Alison comforted him softly.
Standing beside her, Brayden was baffled by her answer. He wondered if she was in her right mind to have said such words.
On the other hand, Barry felt guiltier when he heard her words. Aly is such a wonderful person. Why can’t Brayden cherish her?
“Don’t worry. As long as I’m alive, I will never let that woman into our house,” Barry declared sternly. He was dead serious. “If Brayden dares to fool around, I will kill myself before him.”
“Grandpa.” Brayden looked at him with disapproval.
However, Barry ignored him. He was truly angry with Brayden.
Alison was baffled by Barry’s words, too. She cooed at him and said, “That’s a bad idea, Grandpa.”
“Do
“Yes.”
you have anything in mind?”
“Go on. I’m listening.”
“The biggest threat you can make is to live happily.”
“Is that so?”
“Of course,” Alison cooed at him since she didn’t want him to be mad. “If I can’t get the approval from my loved one’s family, I would be terrified. When I hear their names, I will shiver in fear.”
As Brayden heard her words, he looked at her thoughtfully. She still blabbers nonsense as usual.
“I’ll see who dares to stand against my choice!” Barry took her words seriously and was riled up. “Don’t worry. As long as I’m alive, I will support you no matter what. If anyone dares to insult you, I will teach them a lesson.”
“In that case, you have to take care of yourself. After all, my happiness depends on you.” Alison was good at comforting people.
Eventually, Barry agreed to her words and said, “Alright.”
As they continued to talk with each other, they ignored Brayden wholly.
Looking at their interactions, Sylvia sighed. Dad… I just don’t know what to

“If only you were my granddaughter–in–law.” Barry getting emotional.
Alison didn’t know what to say when she heard his statement. She didn’t know how to respond to
- it.
Suddenly, Barry called out to her, “Aly.”
“Yeah?”
“Why don’t
“Huh?”
you become a family member of the Cornells?”
“I’m going to kick Brayden out of the house.” Barry was serious with his words. After all, his impression of Brayden was getting worse by the day. “After you become the heir of the Cornell Family, I will let you be in charge of the Cornell Corporation.”
At that moment, Alison fell silent. She chose her words carefully and asked, “Do you hate me now?”
“I could never! You will always be my dearest granddaughter!” Barry seemed to be in a better mood.
“If you love me, why do you want me to be in charge of the Cornell Corporation and earn money for Brayden?” She joked. She tried to get this idea out of his mind. “He has the company’s shares. Thus, he will be able to earn money while not doing anything. If that’s the case, I would be willing to get kicked out of the house, too.”
Brayden was at a loss for words.
On the other hand, Barry thought for a moment before saying, “You’re right. I can’t let him take advantage of you.”
